On February 23, we’ll be welcoming close to 250 attendees to a sold-out inaugural NISO Plus conference in Baltimore, MD — and it promises to be an event to remember!
Together with our steering committee of NISO Board members, we’ve put a lot of thought and effort into making NISO Plus a bit different from the average industry conference. From the outset, we wanted the focus to be on engaging with you, our community. So, not only will attendees be hearing from some of the brightest and best in our industry, who will be speaking at the conference, but we also want to ensure that everyone attending has a chance to be heard. Most sessions are designed to be interactive — through breakout groups, icebreakers, informal discussions, and more — with audience involvement strongly encouraged (if not required!). And they’ll each culminate in one or more concrete next steps for NISO and our community, which we will then review and build into our future strategy, as appropriate.
We’re also putting a lot of emphasis on sessions that will help from a practical perspective. For example, there’ll be opportunities to learn why and how to engage with NISO, get the latest on key standards and recommended practices from Content Platform Migration to SSOS, and ask industry experts all about topics such as knowledge bases and metadata. And attendees will be able to ask us anything about NISO (using good old-fashioned post-its on a noticeboard, among other things) — we’ll answer as many questions as we can during the course of the meeting.
Not to forget our keynotes, Amy Brand of the MIT Press and danah boyd of Data & Society — who are certain to inform and inspire in equal measure — as well as pre-conference leader, Bohyun Kim of the University of Rhode Island Library. Plus a multimedia Miles Conrad Award session featuring this year’s winner, James G Neal, along with Deanna Marcum (former NFAIS President) and Todd Carpenter (NISO’s Executive Director), an awards lunch, lightning talks, and a magic show!
Although this year’s NISO Plus is sold out, we hope that many of you will follow along on Twitter (#NISOPlus20). We’ll be sharing the highlights from the NISO account, and welcome your questions and comments.
NISO Plus is made possible through the generosity of our sponsors and, thanks to one of them — Cadmore — we’ll also be recording some sessions, so you can listen in at your leisure after the event.
