NISO Plus 2021 by the Numbers!

Thanks to the hard work and support of many wonderful individuals and organizations around the world, our second NISO Plus conference (February 22-25) went better than we could have hoped! We’re starting to collect formal feedback from attendees and speakers, which we will share next month but, in the meantime, we thought you’d like to see some facts and figures (plus a few quotes) that sum up our first virtual annual conference, as well as this great visualization of the conference, courtesy of speaker Dario Rodighiero. As part of NISO’s ongoing commitment to increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion in our community, one of our key goals for NISO Plus 2021 was to enable much broader participation by information professionals from around the world and across all our stakeholder groups, including libraries, publishing organizations, and the service providers that support them. So we’re delighted to say that, as of today, around 550 people have registered for NISO Plus 2021, more than double the number who attended the in-person conference last year. We are delighted to announce our fourth and final keynote speaker for this year’s NISO Plus conference. Dr. Norihiro Hagita will introduce us to the Japan Science & Technology Agency’s Moonshot Program 1, for which he is Program Director. The JST Moonshot Program Goal 1 aims to overcome the challenges of a declining birthrate, aging population, and associated labor shortage by realizing a society in which human beings can be free from limitations of body, brain, space, and time by 2050. Dr. Tufekci is an associate professor at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in the School of Information and Library Science, with an affiliate appointment in the Department of Sociology. We are delighted to announce that, with the generous support of Digital Science, we are now inviting applications for our NISO Plus 2021 scholarship program. Building on the success of our experience with the first cohort of NISO Plus scholarship winners, we will again be encouraging successful applicants to engage fully with NISO and our community — not just at the NISO Plus conference, but also throughout the year.
