NISO Plus Baltimore 2024

The NISO Plus conference was first held in Baltimore, Maryland, in February 2020, just prior to the shift to virtual meetings that occurred throughout the community in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, the conference has been held virtually and has grown in popularity, drawing over 600 attendees from over 28 countries in 2023. In recent months, however, the demand for a different modality has grown. In response, our fifth-anniversary conference, NISO Plus Baltimore, will take place in person on February 13–14, 2024, at the Hyatt Regency Inner Harbor in Baltimore.

Organized by a committee representing libraries, publishers, vendors, and more from around the world, the program will consist of 4 tracks: Metadata, Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning, Open Access, and a final “Wild Card” track that will include sessions from NISO working groups and updates on NISO projects, as well as topics that emerge over the next few months. The meeting format will emphasize conversation over presentation and offer opportunities throughout for participants to network, collaborate, and explore solutions to challenges currently facing scholarly communications.

You can see our Preliminary Program linked below! We have 2 full days of programming, making sure that we keep you up to speed on the current state of the information ecosystem as well as have space for the conversations that will determine its future.

In addition, NISO will continue its tradition of the Miles Conrad Award and Lecture, as well as our other awards programs: the NISO Plus Scholarship program, the Ann Marie Cunningham Service Award, and the NISO Fellows awards.

Preconference

Need to get up to speed on AI and its use in the information community? On Monday, February 12 (1:00–5:00 pm ET), the National Information Standards Organization (NISO) will host a pre-conference, “Introduction to AI and Machine Learning in Scholarly Communications.” The in-person event will take place at the Hyatt Regency Inner Harbor in Baltimore, one day prior to the fifth anniversary NISO Plus Baltimore conference.

Since the launch of ChatGPT earlier this year, stories about AI have dominated the media. Everyone knows it’s important, but the current and potential impacts on individual roles and organizations are still unclear to many of us. How is AI being used on campuses and in publishing organizations? What are the ethical or legal implications to consider? This 101-style introduction to AI and its many applications in our community is designed for any information professional—librarians, publishers, researchers, or service providers—seeking an introduction to this timely topic. No technical background is necessary to attend.

The half-day workshop will familiarize attendees with the current state of AI and machine learning systems. Our facilitator will set the stage by tracing the history leading up to today’s technologies and explore what the current state-of-the-art machine learning services (both analytical and generative AI) can do. In the second half of the pre-conference, attendees will learn more about these systems through demos and actively engaging with a variety of tools. Participants will come away with a thorough understanding of machine learning services and systems and the ability to critically evaluate their potential, capabilities, and risks.
